yay dun. i’m bored btw. haven’t done much other than work and fool around on the comp since last post. grabbed a boba with a couple friends yesterday. thats about it…

Summer is slowly slipping away, but it actually seems like I’ve gotten quite a lot done, looking back on it. I’m sure I won’t be able to cover everything, but I’ll do what I can.

After the camping trip, it was a little slow for me to change gears really quickly. Took me a few days to get back in the swing of things. I did end up going to the beach to volunteer for an oceanography class that I’ve been helping with for several years now, which was fun. First time I’ve really gone to the beach all summer. The water is SUPER warm. I also got a job at a gelato shop on Broadway in Laguna. Its about 50 yrds inland from main beach and has red awnings and balloons out front. COME VISIT ME SOMETIME!! But yes, for my job I usually work from 4 or 6 to closing, which means I don’t get home till around midnight =/ That unfortunately also affects my next day because I have to sleep in, and by the time I get up and energized, it’s almost too late to get any exercise. I’ve been doing about 20 laps (really small) at the pool when I get the chance, but it’s still not much at all. I also finally got a computer!! It’s the first one that I’m not sharing with a family member, and it’s a beasttttt! I got the top of the line 15″ macbook pro, and it pwns pretty much every pc i’ve used. it’s especially easy to navigate the web and instant messaging stuff because of spaces and more effective bookmarking systems.

Yesterday, I went to the beach with Nathan, where we just kind of hung out for a while. The water was so warm that it felt like a pool O_O! I also got the opportunity to hang out with Michelle (a UCSD friend I met at a bonfire along with many other UCSD people about a month ago) here in Irvine last night. We went to 85 and Sticki Picki and then came home and played games. Quite an awesome evening because I haven’t hung out with just one friend at a time in a LONG time. I kinda miss it…

But yeah, I’m liking this summer, and whenever I have a day off, its pretty darn awesome! Especially cuz the tips I get at work are so good that I don’t even have to take money out of the bank!!

also the title of this is just cuz i’ve had a lot of interactions with dogs lately it seems… like my neighbors on both sides of my house have dogs and the neighbor straight across the street too, and when i was walking back to my car from work tonight (it was pitch black), a black dog was on the grass near me and it started barking. it surprised me cuz i had no idea it was even there!

Alright, this post is online only – no journal because I’m writing it at home and I’m too lazy to do it twice. Obviously we voted to come home early. For breakfast I just had a donut and pineapple slices again. The hike was about 8 miles again (a little longer than the first day), except it was almost all downhill the entire way. Again I carried far too much water (I think I had about 2.5 Liters extra by the end of the hike) but that was kind of on purpose for a better workout. I also had a lot less weight in total because I had eaten a lot of the food. The hike was very windy at times, dusty at times, and hot at times, but overall it was pretty nice. Seemed kinda long tho =/ Anyway, after we got back to the cars, the whole group drove back down to Uncle Bud’s in Big Pine (the place where we got pizza on the 9th) and had burgers. I had a double cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. Quite tasty, I must say. The drive was long as it should be, but we made good time: left Big Pine at 2:10 and got home around 7:00. On the car ride home, I tried to resist, but the great powers of K-Pop forced me to listen to 3 songs before I got home. A few had been stuck in my head for the entire trip and I needed to hear them haha.

All in all it was a pretty good trip. Sure, I hate the 16+ bug bites I have and my hips are killing me and will probably be scars (ask to see the wounds if you want - they aren’t in a werid place or anything), and I brought way too much food/clothing, but I liked the views. I think I’m going to do more car camping though and check out the touristy areas before I do much more backcountry stuff. Also I lost at least 2 lbs and I’m certain that I lost a lot of fat and gained a lot of muscle, so I guess that counts for something >_>. I also have a slight beard which I plan on growing out for a couple more days I think. I need a shave to feel truly clean I think, but the long shower I had earlier today certainly helped a lot.

This is a continuation of my journal from a backpacking trip in the Sierras. Please read the previous entries of Jully 10th and July 11th before continuing. Thanks!

So day 3. It was pretty meh. Lots of bugs early, but they cleared up by the end of breakfast or so. We packed up and left Third Lake after breakfast (which for me consisted of a donut again and some dried pineallpe. The hike was way shorter today than yesterday (only 2 miles or so), but it was still almost all uphill. We were planning on hiking to Fourth Lake, but it was kind of ugly so we went  to the next lake which we had heard was prety. Can you guess the name? Yeah, Fifth Lake. Much nicer. Not many bugs when we got here, but I’m now wearing 4 layers cuz of bugs/cold and a mosquito net on my head. I’m really starting to dislike this trip. Anyway, after we set up camp and had lunch (mine was a tropical fruit or tropical smoothie promax? bar that was good, but not as good as the vanilla crisp one I had yesterday. I also had peanut butter and grabbed a tortilla for the day hike.
THE DAY HIKE: Michael, Mel, Ray, Mr. McCurrie, Mr. Becket, and I backtracked on the trail about 0.5 miles then took another trail (about 1 mile of pure switchbacks, but with cool streams and such) up to Sam Mack Meadow*. It was ery pretty and such with a stram running through an awesome meadow. There were sweet cliffs on all sides and ice/snow all around. There were also two waterfalls up at the top of some cliffs one was your traditional waterfall and the other had a large overhang and basically made a shower of mist. There was also gold in the stream!! (A LOT) But it was all dust, no nuggets, and we had no pans, so we lucked out. Had a nice nap on the grass and saw a cool bird. We then walked back to camp.
EVENING TIME: Spent time relaxing mostly. Ate dinner of freeze dried corn, Mango Hi-Chew, nilla wafers, and thats about it XD I didn’t feel like cooking, so I didn’t. Watched the lake and Killed mosquitos pretty much all of sunset time (yes, mosquitos came back >_<). Michael and I think there are a ton of bugs because there are no bats to eat em up here like there were at base camp =/. Not sure what we’re doing tomorrow, but lots of people want to head home early (me included) because Black Lake where we planned on staying is apparently lame and laso less than 2 miles from where we are now, so not a big hike (and downhill). I would really like to go home cuz I’m not super close to any of the people here. THe closest is 3 years younger than me, and I’m bored and annoyed by bugs. We’re doing a vote tomorrw. I hope the “leaves” win >_>

Ok, no more of the “Dear ___(noun)___” junk. Too traditional* =P sooo… Yeah, first day on the trail and probably the hardest too. I brought too many pants =( … I think … Hopefully I won’t need the rain pants especially. I carried two 1 liter bottles, a half liter bottle, and about 3/4 of a 2 liter platypus** on the hike. Wayyyy too much water. I was well hydrated, but I still brought too much. I drank all of the platypus, the o.5 L bottle, and most of at least one (I can’t remember) of the 1 L bottles. But that was cuz of many reasons. The hike was basically up the whole way. Probably a grand total of about 100 yards of downhill. It was pretty grueling because one kid had altitude sickness and his pack didn’t fit =/ so we had him pace us. The hike was probably around 8 miles and I had full water and food (Really heavy!). We were on th trail for more than 5 hours! -_- Had a good lunch break by the stream. Passed First Lake and Second Lake and are now camping at Third Lake (creative names aren’t they?). Anyway we took forever to find places to pitch tents. Ended up on a nice peninsula of the lake with a good view of Temple Craig and the lake. The bugs SUCK. And I don’t say that lightly. Somewhere around 5 mosquitos a minute bothering you (sometimes more, sometimes less. I went to the tent before dark to escape em. But before I had dinner, which was freeze dried pad Thai. Quite good, surprisingly. I also ate my “cheese cake” (mush that tastes good XD). Speaking of food, I ate good trail snacks: a vanilla (promax? powerbar?) bar and lots of Hi-Chew!! Japaese candy is actually great for camping cuz it keeps your mouth moist and doesn’t melt! Some ppl fished catch and release… yeah. Lots of bugs. Kinda windy at times but not bad generally. Lots of bugs. Water’s very cold. Lots of bugs. Some ominous clouds that look like rain and block stars =( but the weather prediction showed no rain so I have no idea. Sunset was neat tho (only could see light on the clouds, but still neat). My calves hurt for the first time since I started calf raiser daily exercise (which I have done every day since spring break ish!) I’m not enjoying the trip already =( I think I need to do some more car camping again. Hills Suck almost as much as bugs. Meh. Going somewhere else tomorrow

So I took a large, hardcover, plain-paged book with me on the backpacking trip I went on the weekend of the 11th. It was really heavy and quite annoying by the end of the trip, but I felt like keeping a journal of sorts, so I did. This and the next few posts will be entries from the journal. I have tried to copy the journal exactly, so grammar mistakes and such are cuz I wrote it at night heh. I plan on putting photos of the trip up on facebook. And to prove my nerdiness, I planned on putting this into my blog the entire time haha.

Dear Sketchbook*,

Today was firstest day one kinda sorta-ish of the Sierra Trip. Got picked up at 10:00, then headed toward the Mtns. Stopped at a good burger/Mexican (weird combo…) restaurant for lunch. Then drove more. Stopped off at the Mt. Whitney ranger station. Saw Whitney too. (It’s the Jagged one in back of the mtn. range!!) Then went to Big Pine and picked up a pizza. Then drove up a crazzzy hill to the camp by a stream. Lotsa water and a cool bridge at the stream. We then ate the pizza and set up camp. Michael and I climbed a big hill probably about 500 ft vertical or so o_O It was hard cuz of altitude/steep/rocky gravel, but much easier than we expected. Coming down was fun- sort of like skiing on rocks/gravel instead of snow. When we got down, fire was started. Ate more pizza and some Kielbasa cooked on the open fire. Stars were pretty good but a little cloudy. Then the moon came out super bright and made it about the same as the beach back home =/ (good for walking around tho!). Then went to bed and wrote this. Woooooo!! Considering putting this in lameo blog… yeahhh… Ok bye!! BBL (tomorrw! XD)
