Characters: A few friends and I. There were at least 2 girls and another guy, probably 1 or 2 more people. I don’t actually know any of the people in the dream (none of them were real people), but I knew them in the dream… if that makes sense?

So anyway, my friends and I were at someone’s house across the street from a park near my (real and in-dream) house, playing board games or something like that. After a while, we decided to make a venture across the park to get another board game or something like that from another person’s house on the other side of the park. HOWEVER, it was POURING RAIN. So much so that it was like night outside even though it was 4:00 pm in dream time. The amount of rain was the kind that would literally cause rivers in the streets, and there was lightning and stuff. It was a dream, so there weren’t rivers like there should’ve been, but there were still a lot of puddles and mud and stuff (like when it’s raining hard, but not HARD)

Part of the dream actually hovered over to a firetruck out on the street, where the firemen were making announcements about the bad weather and that people should stay in cover inside for the most part (like a tornado warning kind of deal, but without the tornado, but tornadoes were possible). Anyway, the firemen announced that they were going to go check if there were people in the pool on the other side of the park, because people shouldn’t be in the pool when there is lightning. For some reason, they called the situation where a lot of people are in the pool (like filled to the brim) a “monkey pool”. Don’t ask me how that correlates at all haha

SO, we began our journey out of the house. We ran across the park, and one other guy and I beat the others. He got the thing from the house and we started our return just as the other group was getting to the house (we’re apparently much faster than everyone else o_O). I beat the guy back to the first house. As I turned around to watch him, we had a yelling conversation about the lightning and how it kept striking in between us and we were lucky we weren’t getting hit, but that was because we were smart and not standing next to the neighborhood’s trees. He eventually caught up, and we wondered where the others/the girls were. We looked across the way and saw them struggling to make it through the mud in the middle of the park. Then we heard a scream. Instinctively, we ran over to the girls, one of whom was sitting down very scared/in pain. I got there first

(WARNING! Gruesome part!) After one quick look, I knew something wasn’t right. Upon closer inspection, the girl’s leg had separated into two part at the knee; as in, her shin and her foot were not attached to the rest of her body. She explained that her foot had gotten stuck in the mud while she was running, and her leg snapped/popped off. EWWW. Fortunately, the dream was not gruesome in the visual sense. There was basically no blood (probably washed away by the rain hahah, and the leg bone was showing, but there was no ugly flesh showing (the girl was wearing pants or something). I tried to get her severed leg out of the mud, but to no avail.

Anyway, the dream turned from being happy fun racing around in the rain to a severed leg. I got the other guy to go find the firemen who were there earlier/call an ambulance and started some first aid for the girl. Then the dream just faded until I was awake.

Not as comical as some of my past dreams, but indeed equally as weird. It was probably the longest dream that I actually remembered too. 2nd nightmare (first one involved a bad guy from power rangers attacking my mom who was apparently a gardener…?). Anyhoo, it’s been a while since I posted about my trip. I’ve since returned from Beijing to Hangzhou for a couple days, then went to Xian. Xian had such bad air quality that we had to leave 2 days early. Saw the terra cotta warriors and climbed some famous mountain though. Went to a zoo today back in Hangzhou. I’m out of time, so I’ll post more detail later. BYE ALL

I was in Beijing this morning! But now I’m back in Hangzhou on Julia’s computer. This will be condensed and I will probably be leaving a few things out, but I’ll do my best to summarize the trip. I apologize if I offend anyone with my commentary.

-Hangzhou has a new airport. It’s really nice and cool looking and it’s supposed to be an international airport in a few years or so!
-Met up with the tour group in the airport. There were a few Chinese Americans in the group, but all spoke Chinese (which is not surprising considering it was a Chinese-speaking tour group), in addition to English
-We flew on Hunan Airlines, which has a very Chinese feel to it. The seats were all red and had Chinese designs on them in gold. Each seat had its own touch screen TV, which I used to play Bejeweled on the way there for the first time and watched most of the Simpsons movie on the way back (flight ended before it finished). The piloting seemed a little risky though. The landings were shaky and kind of hard =/
-First day in Beijing, we pretty much just slept. We were tired from travel and the flight had been delayed, so we got into the hotel around 1am.
-The Hotel was the “National Jade Hotel.” Supposedly, it was a 4-star hotel. I don’t know what it once was, but it was much lower in my opinion upon arrival. Here’s why: 1. Smoking allowed. Everywhere. The lobby smelled horrible, as did my room the first day or so. 2. Rust present in the bathtub. 3. burnt-out lightbulb in a lamp and all of the lampshades were damaged. 4. Minifridge was neither cold (it was room-temperature) nor large (you could probably fit 3 standard water bottles in it). 5. The door did not close properly. My door wouldn’t close without slamming, and Julia/Lillian’s door would sometimes close without locking. 6. TV remote basically didn’t work (only if you pushed a bunch of times really hard). 7. Shower head didn’t work. 8. Bed was hard as a rock (apparently cultural?) Other than those things, the hotel wasn’t bad, and I got used to it. Food tasted pretty good at breakfast and there was nice furniture/rocks in the lobby.
-Beijing is very similar to Irvine in temperature, but drier, dustier, more CO2-filled, and worse allergens for me. The traffic system is far better than Hangzhou due to Law Enforcement actually using that “E”-word there, but still a ways from the US. The duck there is good (it is famous haha). I would not recommend Beijing for people with asthma. It would not be pleasant. The ancient Chinese buildings often have copied styles in modern buildings, so you often can’t tell if a building is 5 years old or 500, but it doesn’t matter too much. The city also has some cool architecture

-Itinerary/what we did:
Day 1: Plane, check in, and sleep

Day 2: Shopping district near Tiananmen Square, Mao’s tomb, Tiananmen Square itself (which, if you ask me, is not the largest square in the world as it is advertised to be), and about 1/2 of the forbidden city. Ate lunch at an okay restaurant with the tour group. We ate dinner with Will (mostly duck) and got drinks at a jazz club. They were non-alcoholic for Will and I. Very cool.

Day 3: Climbed the Great Wall and went to the temple of heaven. Stopped at a “farmer’s” restaurant. A bunch of the people in the tour group REALLY hated the food and were angry at the tour guide; so much so that they walked out on the meal. It made Julia really angry and caused some tension in our little group too because Lillian wasn’t eating due to a stomach ache, and I wasn’t because it didn’t seem very sanitary. We ate dinner with Will again that night (Duck) and I had alcohol for the first time. It was sake. And also kind of gross. Not a drinker, nor will I be from what I can tell. On this day, I was really happy to have Will around because I was getting really stressed out. Having only 2 people to talk to in your language is really depressing when you can hear them talking to each other or other people and know they are talking about other things and not telling you. Even with Julia and Lillian translating, things VERY CLEARLY were left out from what the tour guide was saying. I was VERY seriously considering leaving China 2 weeks early to go home because I was not enjoying myself and know that I could in more favorable circumstances. Never again do I plan on going on a tour with a language that I don’t speak. Hopefully the one in 2 days in Xian will be better. We’ll wait and see.

Day 4: Break day (because of the stress mentioned for day 3). Lillian, Julia, and I ate lunch at Pizza hut, which is more like a CPK in China than the US version of Pizza hut. Then Lillian and I let Julia sleep at the hotel. I went shopping with Will and Lillian at a fake-ish department store. Bought a fake Burberry shirt and an Omega watch. I hope the watch lasts… Also went to a rock wholesale store (Will likes rocks). Lillian bought some jade and I bought a crystal bracelet for around $40 US. Will thinks is worth over $100! Yay! Then we went to Will’s grandparents’ apartment where Will is staying. Then we went to get Julia at the hotel. We had hot pot for dinner, followed by McDonald’s Ice Cream. We walked from McD’s to the hotel, where I quickly fell asleep because I had taken 2 benadryl XD

Day 5: Went to a 500-yr old house of a governor, then to a garden behind the forbidden city. Climbed a hill there.  Ate lunch at the same place as lunch on day 2 of the tour. Went to the airport to return to Hangzhou. Ate dinner at Julia’s and Typed this

Also somewhere in there (I think Day 4, but it might have been day 5), we checked out the 2008 Beijing Olympic complex at night. The water cube and bird’s nest were pretty cool, as was a random olympic tower-thing that was there. Plans for tomorrow are to relax.

ANYWAY, like I said, I didn’t like the tour or the hotel. I seriously think Beijing is a fairly tourist-friendly city and could be done without the tour group very easily though. Just make sure you check up on good restaurants and shopping (I suggest asking Will haha). I like Beijing though, and it was fun to hang out with Will. Didn’t see the Emperor’s Summer Palace, so maybe I’ll return some day for that. Now I must sleep because it’s 2am!

Anyway, today we went to a (the?) major university here in Hangzhou and met some of Julia’s old high school friends. We ate at the school’s nicest dining hall, which they said was more like a restaurant than one of their dining halls. The food was varied. Some I liked, some I didn’t. One of the dishes tasted like it came from Panda Express! XD We then went downstairs to the regular dining hall, and I got a Coke. I don’t know if it was the heat/humidity or the actual coke itself, but it seemed to taste better than coke in the US. We then wandered the university in the blazing sun for several hours, visiting a dormitory (they have 4 people to a room that is just barely bigger than triples at UCSD), some classrooms, and a river/lake. We also went by some basketball courts, some tennis courts, the architecture building, and the theater. We also took a break inside of the library because it had AC, but we couldn’t go into the main part of the library because we weren’t students. I felt kind of left out of a lot of things because of the language barrier. All of the people we met could speak English, but Julia and Lillian talked in Chinese the whole time, so I felt pretty left out. Next time I travel to a country that doesn’t speak english, I’m either going to know some of the language or I’m going to go with someone else who doesn’t know any too, because Lillian really doesn’t count in that category at all. Overall, the university was big, hot, and there wasn’t much to do. Nice plantings and it was much cleaner than the rest of the city, but the buildings were dirty

On that note, I’m going to make a general observation about China. On almost every building that has non-glass surfaces on the top of it (most buildings), it looks as though it has rained lightly and the water has started running down from the top of the building. The only thing is, the “rain” running down is black and it’s completely dry. It’s an ugly, ashy tinge in the roofs and sides of the buildings, and the same stuff covers the curbs and sidewalks that aren’t cleaned. It’s very likely caused by acid rain/pollution. Very sad. Also, with the exception of those at the university, ALL of the sidewalks that I’ve been on here could use a power-wash. They need to be cleaned. This country has a LONG way to go in terms of pollution. I can’t fully understand what though, because I can’t see any smokestacks other than those for power plants, and those are very uncommon. I saw 1 building with solar panels and a couple windmills, and it gave me a little hope.

On the way back from the university, we drove through what Julia called a “tourist area,” which was basically a gigantic park, full of lakes and pagodas, forests, and such. It looked nice, but it was very hot outside. I think we’re going there again after the trips to Beijing and Xian.

Anyway, going to Beijing tomorrow and hopefully, we’re gonna meet Will for dinner! I hope This trip starts to head in the opposite direction for almost everything because the only part that I felt relaxed was the taxi ride through the tourist area =/

-takes forever to get here by plane
-very humid, but not too hot (like hawaii in spring)
-there are way fewer cars than the US for a city of this size
-for some reason, there were VERY FEW cars on the road last night. We drove for about 2.5 hours on the freeway and only saw 30 or so o_O
-KFC is really big/popular here
-The international terminal that we arrived at was GIGANTIC. The building (room) that our plane gate emptied to was so big that I couldn’t see either end of the building…
-there are very few white people here, and I tend to get stared at a lot
-A chinese Large is an American Medium (for clothes)
- People drive crazy, but not as crazy as I expected
-The guards outside of the police station didn’t like it when I tried to take a picture of the building. It was a big building and there was lots of marble inside. Obviously expensive. The Chinese government should spend less on making its buildings big/pretty and more on its police force and enforcing traffic laws
-The reason people drive crazily sometimes is because in some locations, there are no stop lights or stop signs….
-Went to a department store sort of like a mix between Macy’s and Bloomingdales. It was about the same prices as the same clothes in the US, so I didn’t buy anything
-took a taxi to a “chinatown” that is a market for tourists made to look like an old chinese market. I bought some stuff. It rained while we were there. Then we went to 85C!!! The Tapioca Milk Tea is much better at the US store.
-there are a lot of tall buildings under construction or pitch black at night. it’s kind of creepy.
-got a haircut too. My hair now looks very asian. not quite what I wanted, but it still looks good. Did i mention that the haircut included hair washing; a head, arm, and shoulder massage; and ear cleaning? And also it only cost about $10 US!! SO CHEAP! Its strange how some things here are about the same price as in the US, while others are clearly a LOT cheaper…. I guess I’ll see more of this strange pricing system in the future!
